It is only thoughts that create interference between you and a state of deep peace, but you don’t need to allow this to occur because thinking is totally optional.
Instead of getting lost in thoughts, you can become aware of your breathing and your body. Try it now. Enjoy breathing more fully and deeply, and this will help you become more aware of your body and enable it to relax. When your body relaxes, your heart will relax also and peace will gently be restored.
If your heart is tense, that means fear is present. Fear is generated by the thinking mind, as it envisions scenarios that it does not want to happen and then physically resists them as if they were real. We call this physical resistance ‘tension’. Tension will always be present if there is a fearful thought getting our attention. We really need to get good at spotting fearful thoughts, for it is they that literally interfere with our peace, our joy and our deep enjoyment of being.
This state of deep enjoyment of being is our natural state. It is the full activation of our body and heart, which are designed to house the powerful force of life; the consciousness and fire of the universe, the energy of creation, the divine light and intelligence which is behind everything.
This fire is very much fuelled by your breathing; in fact it relies totally upon your breathing to continue to burn in the way it should, and illuminate your mind with radiant consciousness. This is why it is so important to be aware of your breathing, instead of thinking.
We get allured into thinking, believing our thoughts to be interesting, accurate and true, but in fact they are totally abstract and just lead our attention into an abstract realm of conceptual thought, which takes us away from our body and our heart, away from a grounded experience of peace, balance, connectedness, joy and gratitude. None of these things can be experienced in our thoughts. We have to feel them in our heart, from where they flow out, to be felt our body.
We cannot think ourselves into peace, into joy, into security, into love. We have to bring our attention away from all the thoughts and back to our heart, back to our body. The very best way to do this is through breathing deeply and relaxing your body. In any situation, even in the midst of deeply disturbing or fearful thoughts, you can quickly move away from the negativity of the mind by doing this.
“We are all children, longing to find our way back to
the world of innocence, joy and freedom we once knew”
“We must accept that there is darkness in this world
whilst ensuring that we are moving towards the light.”
